Do-it-yourself

Do-it-yourself

For messages accompanying packages, or for everyday letters to your missionary, homemade stationary is a simple, inexpensive way to keep things fun. Check out the “Stationery Printables” section of this site for a few designs I put together, or do an image search on google to find a design you really love.

Candy-grams are so fun, but unfortunately, shipping a large, stiff posterboard to your missionary isn’t usually an option. By changing a few things, however, this present becomes possible again.

Last year, a family member and I made candy-grams for our cousins serving in Montreal and Romania. Here’s how we were able to ship them:

Instead of putting the candy on a posterboard, use fabric. Go to your local craft store and get a yard or so of Halloween-themed material, and then attach the candy with a hot glue gun. Use a permanent marker to write out the message on the fabric. Our missionaries loved these!

This project is very fun, but can become expensive to ship, so use discretion when planning for length and amount of candy used.

Hello everyone!

My brother is entering the MTC a few days before Halloween, and I thought it would be fun to send him a box full of “one-prop” Halloween costumes. In other words, any costume where all you need is a suit (as he will most likely be wearing one) and one other item.

Can you help me brainstorm?

count_chocula_2_3This is the same idea as the Lucky Charms for St. Patrick’s Day (it’s amazing how many creative cereals there are out there). You could go to a party store and send disposable Halloween-themed bowls and orange utensils, napkins, etc… Look for the two other “Monster Cereals” — Frankenberry and Boo-berry!

Comes in Several Varieties!

Comes in Several Varieties!

Why not send your missionary a package full of treats he or she can share with companions? Pez are cheap, lightweight, and won’t melt on the way. Sending several is a good way to help your missionary get along with room-mates. Be sure to send extra pez candies so there’s enough to go around.

customs.formAfter literally years of tediously hand-writing customs forms, usually in line at the post office, trying to write while saving my place in line, running out of room for my boyfriend’s hugely long address in Brazil, etc…  I discovered a few days ago that you can fill out customs forms online and print them out ahead of time. If you’re like me, this will save you quite the headache!

I encountered two difficulties while using this:

1. You need to be able to identify the parts of an address. Don’t know which numbers are the postal code and which are street numbers (it can sometimes be very hard to tell)? Try using this site:

http://www.bitboost.com/ref/international-address-formats.html

.

2. It asks for the weight of your package. I didn’t know the weight, so I just put in “1 pound, 0 ounces,” and then had the postal worker weigh the package when I got to the post office, and he wrote the value in with a pen.

If you can handle those two tricky things, this is a great way to spend less time at the post office, and more time focusing on your missionary!
